The Mapleys in North Tasmania

Ulverstone

Ulverstone Post Office, Tasmania

After Richard Mapley (born 1810) of Great Linford moved to Tasmania in 1845, with his wife Fanny and children Joseph, Joshua, joining him in 1849, they initially settled in Hobart briefly, before moving to New Norwalk/Lachlan up the Derwent River 20 miles from Hobart.

As Tasmania flourished, 2nd generation family members moved to the State capital Hobart, although Joseph Daniel lived in Spring Bay and raised a family before returning to Hobart. Other members of the 3rd generationalso headed north. 3 of John Mapley's (1864 - 1916) children settled on the north coast at Ulverstone, Burnie and Beaumaris in the 1930's & 40's, as the timber industry developed.

John Mapley's cousin Samuel Joshua (1864 - 1945) inspired further travels, with 4 children moving across the Bass Straits to mainland Victoria.
